Neutrino Faster Than light..Remarkable Change In Physics

A pillar of physics - that nothing can go faster than the speed of light - appears to be smashed by an oddball subatomic particle that has apparently made a giant end run around Albert Einstein's theories.
Scientists at the world's largest physics lab said Thursday they have clocked neutrinos traveling faster than light. That's something that according to Einstein's 1905 special theory of relativity - the famous E (equals) mc2 equation - just doesn't happen.

CERN neutrinos travel faster than light

The Chicago team had similar faster-than-light results in 2007, but those came with a giant margin of error that undercut its scientific significance.

Other outside scientists expressed skepticism at CERN's(European Organization for Nuclear Research) claim that the neutrinos — one of the strangest well-known particles in physics — were observed smashing past the cosmic speed barrier of 186,282 miles per second (299,792 kilometers per second).

CERN says a neutrino beam fired from a particle accelerator near Geneva to a lab 454 miles (730 kilometers) away in Italy traveled 60 nanoseconds faster than the speed of light. Scientists calculated the margin of error at just 10 nanoseconds, making the difference statistically significant. But given the enormous implications of the find, they still spent months checking and rechecking their results to make sure there were no flaws in the experiment.

Supermoon may cause extreme disaster on March 19th..!

The world could be in for a bumpy ride next week when the moon will make its closest approach to Earth in almost 20 years, say experts.

According to them, the astronomical event - "extreme supermoon" - may trigger earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other disasters.

An "extreme supermoon" occurs when the Earth's natural satellite reaches its absolute closest point. On March 19, the moon will be only 221,556 miles away - the first extreme super - moon in nearly 20 years

Previous supermoons - or "lunar perigees" - happened in 1955, 1974, 1992 and 2005. Each year had extreme weather events.

however... A moon can't cause a geological event like an earthquake, but it will cause a difference to the tide. If that combines with certain weather conditions, then that could cause a few problems for coastal areas.

Life has been detected on 3 meteors..We're not alone!

Life has been detected on three meteorites in the form of tiny fossilized bacteria by a NASA scientist.

Findings have also shown that these bacteria don't belong to our planet. The research has opened doors for several speculations, including that the very base of existence of life on earth may have begun elsewhere in the solar system. However, a confirmation on the same is awaited. 

Astrobiologist, Richard Hoover, based at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama, has spent his years in the study of microscopic life-forms that can survive extreme environments such as glaciers, permafrost and geysers. His observations state that microfossils similar to cyanobacteria – blue-green algae (pond scum) have been traced on the unearthed corners of the meteorites. In a report published in Reuters, Hoover stated that typical of earthly bacteria, these too had lots of carbon and zero nitrogen  in them. Nitrogen in these, however, is suspected to have turned into gaseous form over the years of its existence.

However, the relic of we having neighbors in the universe isn't an exclusive one. In 1996, life on Mars was indicated after NASA presented a 4-billion year old meteorite that was found in Antarctica.

It now remains to be researched further to really know if we’re alone, or not!

New satellites to be able to predict earthquakes..!

A team of British and Russian scientists have launched a project that could predict when and where earthquakes will occur, and thus save thousands of lives.

An agreement to work together on the project, that was signed in Moscow, says the TwinSat project involves the launch of two satellites - one is about the size of a TV set and the other smaller than a shoebox - which will orbit the earth a few hundred kilometres apart, The Independent reported.

Data from the satellites will be collated with data from the ground as the scientists try to understand what natural warnings are given prior to earthquakes.

'As stress builds up in the Earth prior to an earthquake, subtle electromagnetic signals are released that can be read from the upper atmosphere,' said Alan Smith, director of the Mullard Space Science Laboratory at the University College, London.

We want to try to work out how these signals differ from all the other things that are present at any given time.

The two linked satellites will monitor zones with high seismic and volcanic activity, such as Iceland and the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russia's far east.

This project could be a huge step towards understanding how to read the signals.

'Just imagine if we could have accurately predicted the Haiti earthquake a few weeks before,' said Chmyrev.

'Or if we had predicted the Icelandic volcano eruption that paralysed transport routes for weeks. The potential human and economic benefits are enormous.'

 the satellites were so small, the technology was relatively cheap.

If the project progresses as we want it to, we'll be able to send up several more of them to increase coverage.

The first satellite launch is planned for 2015.

The dawn of intelligent machines..!

The idea may scare some, but Intel predicts that by 2050 machines could surpass the peak of human intelligence.
So predicted Justin Rattner, chief technology officer at the chip maker, in a presentation at the Intel Developer Forum which examined how technology is expected to bridge the gap between man and machine.
The vision included sensitive robots and shape-shifting materials.

 "There is no question that one of the most likely things that will happen in the next 40 years is that machine and human intelligence will come much closer together," Mr Rattner told the BBC.

He said: "There is speculation that we may be approaching an inflection point where the rate of technology advancements is accelerating at an exponential rate, and machines could even overtake humans in their ability to reason, in the not so distant future."
Mr Rattner's keynote speech included a video presentation from inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil who talked about the impending day when humans create a machine smarter than they are - a moment dubbed "The Singularity".
Mr Kurzweil said: "That machines will be more intelligent than humans is not a question of if or when it will happen. The real question is: What will it take for us to make it happen?"

Mr Rattner tried to answer the question by talking about the technological advances going on at Intel.
He said the company was researching social interaction, robotics, increases in wireless communication, signalling and better sensors that help a computer sense the world around it.

 Mr Rattner also told the audience that the company's research labs are already looking at human-machine interfaces as well as investigating future implications to computing.

WREL technology promises to free users from power cords and wall sockets

In another demonstration, Intel revealed its work on programmable matter called catoms. Fully realised these will use millions of tiny micro-robots which are used to build shape shifting materials. The technology could make it possible for a device to actually change physical form in order to suit the way it is being used.

Apophis Astroid(=65,000 nuclear bombs) Could Strike Earth in 2036..!

The Apophis asteroid could collide with the Earth on April 13, 2036, Russian astronomers say, according to Science.

"Apophis will approach Earth at a distance of 37,000–38,000 kilometers (22,990–23,612 miles) on April 13, 2029,” Professor Leonid Sokolov at St. Petersburg State University told Science. “Its likely collision with Earth may occur on April 13, 2036.”

However, Sokolov said that the possibility of an actual strike is highly unlikely, because the 900-foot-long chunk of space rock will probably break up into fragments before then, leading to smaller collisions with our planet over several years.

Sokolov and his colleagues are predicting the event based on the possibility that the asteroid’s trajectory could be altered if it passes through a small gravitational keyhole in 2029.

NASA has confirmed the scenario put forward by the Russian space agency, following the discovery of Apophis in 2004, when NASA originally considered it a substantial threat to Earth’s future.

But Yeomans said the probability of this happening is only 1-in-250,000. In April 2029, the asteroid will travel within five Earth radii of the planet, but there is only a "miniscule" chance it will pass through the keyhole, which is not much bigger than Apophis itself. If it does, however, it will be sent on a 2036 crash course for Earth

NASA estimates the energy from this particular asteroid to be roughly the same as if 65,000 nuclear bombs were dropped on us. What happens next depends on where it hits. It would certainly trash the immediate area, and it looks like estimates (from Wikipedia) tell us that an impact winter (a period of extended cold weather brought on by dust and particles shrouding the Earth and blocking the Sun) is unlikely.

NASA: The First 360 degree view of full Sun...!

NASA has released the first 360-degree view of the entire sun today, just in time for Super Bowl Sunday.

The photo comes courtesy of NASA's twin STEREO (Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory) spacecraft, which aligned exactly opposite each other around the sun to capture the image.

The ability to see the whole sun, front to back, will allow scientists to better understand complicated solar weather patterns and plan for future robotic or crewed spacecraft missions throughout the solar system, researchers said.

"The sun is a truly complex object which influences many aspects of our lives," Richard Harrison, principal investigator for the U.K. instruments on STEREO, said in a statement. "In the same way that you would not expect to understand the workings of the brain by studying just a small part of it, a global investigation into the nature of our star as a complete object is essential to understanding how it works."

Harrison is also co-investigator of NASA's SDO mission (Solar Dynamics Observatory), which contributed to the new 360-degree view with high-resolution sun photos taken from orbit.

Two Guys + An HD Camera + Helium Baloon = Space Mission

Sometimes technology for what seems like a seriously intense, high-end (and I mean that literally as well) function can be made simply and without too much of stress on your pocket book. Take these two guys for example – Alex Baker (age 26) and Chris Rose (age 25), a couple of PhD students from Sheffield University in South Yorkshire, England, who designed, built and launched their own little ‘earth capture’ camera unit into space. There was no hydrogen or other fueled rocket involved here, just simple stuff that could be bought at any local convenience store.

All it took were things available at a supermarket and any electronics store

Their rig consisted of a GPS device that would relay co-ordinates to the ‘Dynamic-duo’ via text message after a simple call made to the device, an couple of HD digital cameras (one looks remarkably like a Creative Vado HD and the other like a Sony digicam), duct tape, a specially designed Styrofoam box to house the devices and a large helium filled balloon. The camera and GPS device were placed inside the box into slots that were cut out to keep them steady and then sealed with duct tape to keep the devices inside toasty warm while traversing the frigid outer regions (-50 degrees) of the planet.

The pair even made sure that wherever the box landed it would be returned safely to them. They did this by simply putting their numbers and names and sticking to the package. Can this get anymore low tech?

Gorgeous isn't she...

Footage and images captured with this low budget system looked really impressive. The whole kit cost them no more than Rs. 25,000 which included the price of the cameras, GPS device and all other items. Just goes to show, all it takes sometimes are great minds with no money to do something out of this world, well, almost out of this world

At Stockholm's busy Central Station, engineers use heating exchangers to convert body heat into hot water and then pump that water to an office building next door, providing it with environmentally friendly and cost effective heating.
The process can reduce energy costs by up to 25%.

NASA: A Massive Star transforming into a Dangerous Missile

The blue star near the center of this image is Zeta Ophiuchi. When seen in visible light it appears as a relatively dim red star surrounded by other dim stars and no dust. However, in this infrared image taken with NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE, a completely different view emerges. Zeta Ophiuchi is actually a very massive, hot, bright blue star plowing its way through a large cloud of interstellar dust and gas.

Astronomers theorize that this stellar juggernaut was likely once part of a binary star system with an even more massive partner. It's believed that when the partner exploded as a supernova, blasting away most of its mass, Zeta Ophiuchi was suddenly freed from its partner's pull and shot away like a bullet moving 24 kilometers per second (54,000 miles per hour). Zeta Ophiuchi is about 20 times more massive and 65,000 times more luminous than the sun. If it weren't surrounded by so much dust, it would be one of the brightest stars in the sky and appear blue to the eye.

NASA's Rover mission: Magnificent 7 years on the Planet Mars

While NASA's Spirit rover is frozen in place on Mars and potentially dead to the world, the Opportunity rover is hale and hearty as it begins its eighth year of operation on the Red Planet.

Signs of california shifting to new capital(San fransisco) again...!

A group of more than 100 scientists and experts say in a new report that California faces the risk of a massive "superstorm" that could flood a quarter of the state's homes and cause $300 billion to $400 billion in damage. Researchers point out that the potential scale of destruction in this storm scenario is four or five times the amount of damage that could be wrought by a major earthquake.
It sounds like the plot of an apocalyptic action movie, but scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey warned federal and state emergency officials that California's geological history shows such "superstorms" have happened in the past, and should be added to the long list of natural disasters to worry about in the Golden State.
The threat of a cataclysmic California storm has been dormant for the past 150 years. Geological Survey director Marcia K. McNutt told the New York Times that a 300-mile stretch of the Central Valley was inundated from 1861-62. The floods were so bad that the state capital had to be moved to San Francisco, and Governor Leland Stanford had to take a rowboat to his own inauguration, the report notes. Even larger storms happened in past centuries, over the dates 212, 440, 603, 1029, 1418, and 1605, according to geological evidence.

Invisible war machines onto the battlefield....!

Within a few years the Brits may deploy invisible armored tanks onto the battlefield, a breakthrough in stealth technology that Harry Potter would certainly applaud.

Defense contractor BAE Systems is working on the technology, which uses a "display system within the structure of the vehicle" to display images captured by cameras on one side of the vehicle on the opposite side so that the vehicle "blends in with the background scenery," company spokesman Mike Sweeney explained to me today.

"We also have a way to protect that structure from battle damage and that's obviously key," he added.

The images would be constantly updated, keeping the tank camouflaged as it rolls through the landscape.

Control Everything without touching them(gesture-recognition technology)..!

• Tech visionaries have long dreamed of the day when PCs, TVs and phones can be controlled with a wave of the hand or even the blink of an eye.

• "Natural user interface" technologies on display at last week's Consumer Electronics Show suggest that vision is inching closer to the mainstream - tearing down barriers between user and device, and dispensing with unwieldy keyboards and remotes.

• The technology, stoked in the public imagination by the sci-fi hit film Minority Report, could be approaching a tipping point and can empower applications beyond simple user commands, according to industry insiders.

• "Control everything without touching it - it's moving that way faster than ever," said Janine Kutliroff, CEO and founder of Omek Interactive, an Israeli company that makes software for gesture recognition through 3-D sensors, so you can play games or manipulate a TV just by moving your hands and body.

• "Cameras are going to get smaller and cheaper. There's a lot of competitive technology out there," said Kutliroff, whose company was one of a handful showing off gesture control technologies at CES in Las Vegas.

North Pole shift's 10 degrees right...forces airport makeover again

Don't think of this as another sign of the apocalypse, but Earth's magnetic north pole has been shifting enough that Tampa's airport has to repaint the numbers on its runways.

For decades, the magnetic north pole has been migrating from Canadian Arctic territory toward Russia. That shift has accelerated in recent years, and current estimates suggest that the pole is moving at almost 40 miles a year. Movements in the magnetic poles are caused by the motion of molten iron at Earth's core, which serves as the planet's magnetic dynamo. Here is how NASA explains.

Airports generally change their runway designations every few decades, depending on how the pole shifts shake out numerically. For example, Stansted Airport in the London area renamed its 23/05 runway as 22/04 in July 2009 to reflect the magnetic shift. "It'll roughly be another 56 years before we have to consider changing it again," Trevor Waldock, head of airside operations at Stansted, told the BBC at the time.
A catastrophic pole shift is one of the oft-used plot devices in doomsday tales — and some of the doomsayers have tried to link the phenomenon to the 2012 Maya apocalypse. Earth's magnetic poles have been known to reverse themselves every 400,000 years or so, in a process that's outlined in the video above.
This NASA Web page explains that the shift in the magnetic poles, or even a pole reversal, need not be feared. "As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesn't cause any harm to life on Earth," NASA says. But a lot of runway numbers might need to be repainted.
