10 Killer things to know about iPhone 5S

Here are the top 10 things that you need to know about Apple's new iPhones.

#10.

The iOS7 will see a much improved version of Siri - it can now draw on information from Twitter, Wikipedia and image searches.

Apple said: “We’ve also made search more convenient than ever before. With iOS7, you can pull down from anywhere and type what you’re looking for and find it, just like that”

#9.

The cheaper handset - the iPhone 5C - comes in five colours: white, green, yellow, blue and red.

Apple said: "The entire back and sides are made from a single part, its front is one glass, multi-touch surface. As close as you look, you wont see joints or seams. This is more colourful than any iPhone we've made yet."

#8.

Not only that, but the iPhone 5C comes with a Connect-4 style case. Each case has holes cut out, allowing a bit of the phone’s original colour to pop through.

Apple said: “The team has created a really cool line of custom cases for the 5C. They’re soft, and cool. The soft, matte texture of the case is a contrast to the bright, glossy back of the phone.”

#7.

Your next iPhone will be as fast as a computer. The iPhone 5S has a brand new chip called the A7, which makes it two times as fast as the iPhone 5.

Apple said: “The iPhone 5S is a huge leap forward in mobile computing performance. It starts with a brand new system on a chip called the A7. A7 is 64-bit, the world’s first and only such CPU in a smartphone.”

#6.

As well as this, the iPhone 5S has a chip called the M7. It's a motion processor, which continuously measures motion data, accelerometer, and gestural data.

Apple have been working with Nike to test this, building an app that counts your stride and movements throughout the day. It can determine whether you’re walking or driving.

Apple sees this opening a “whole new generation of health and fitness applications”.

#5

The battery life of the iPhone 5S is “even better than that of the iPhone 5".

It survives 10 hours of constant Wi-Fi browsing, and a whopping 250 hours on standby.

#4.

Apple have made serious upgrades on the iPhone 5S's camera. The flash now has two LEDs — one white, and one amber.

This means it analyses the lighting in the room, adjusting the color of the flash accordingly. Your photos should be of the highest quality, no matter what the light.

#3.

There is a brand new fingerprint sensor called the Touch ID.

The Touch ID fingerprint sensor is located on the home button, reading your fingerprint as a more secure way to protect your phone.

Apple say: “Now you can simply touch the home button to unlock your phone. Since it’s built in, you can also use it to make iTunes purchases.

"It reads your fingerprint at an incredibly detailed level. The sensor is thinner than a human hair"

#2.

The iPhone 5S rumours were spot on - the handset is coming out in a subtle gold shade, alongside the usual slate-grey and white.

Apple say: “This is our most forward thinking phone yet. It’s available in silver, gold, and space grey.”

#1.

And finally, the release dates. iOS7 is coming out on September 18, while both the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C are coming out on September 20.

See how Falling Rupee hurts and changes your way of life !!

Interest rates

With a weak Indian rupee, it may be difficult for the RBI to cut interest rates at the monetary policy meeting next week. India’s dependency on foreign investors to bring inflows in order to bridge current account deficit is one of the key factors that will be considered for interest rate changes.

Education

A weak rupee can weigh down your chances of studying abroad. Since students borrow education loans in local currency and spend in foreign currency, you will have to shell out more rupees to buy the dollar which would make accommodation, food and cost of education abroad costly.

Travel
If you are planning to travel while the rupee is weak, you may want to reconsider as air fares will be expensive considering an increase in fuel surcharge. Also, eating out when you are traveling overseas will turn out to be costly because you will end up spending more rupees.

Loans

Depreciation of rupee will impact loan seekers in a big way. If you apply for a car loan, you will have to pay more depending on where the vehicle is assembled and the components imported by the automobile company.

Oil prices

Rupee depreciation may prompt oil companies to hike petrol and diesel prices. India is highly dependent on importing oil and companies will have to shell out more money to import crude in dollars

Inflation

A weak currency will increase the price of imports which will translate into an increase in the prices of consumer products. Depreciating rupee will also cause an increase in inflation.

Imports

A falling rupee makes imports more expensive in terms of rupees. India is a major importer of oil, gold and iron ore among other things, and more money spent on imports will show up in inflation data which in turn will lead to increase in electronics, fuel prices and consumer products.

Exports
On the bright side, rupee depreciation will help increase India’s export competitiveness especially with other emerging Asian markets like China and Korea. But, a weak rupee alone may not boost the country’s exports.

Companies
Considering India’s reliance for raw materials from overseas, a weaker rupee affects the profits of companies. While IT and pharma sector gain from a weak rupee, it might be trouble for aviation.

Its good news for a few IT companies operating in India because most of the countries tech firms gain revenue from the US, a weak rupee can help them earn relatively more. Pharmaceuticals companies in the doing business in the country will gain when rupee depreciates because they export more than they import. On the other hand, aviation sector will be disappointed with a weak rupee because most of their earnings are in rupees while they spend in dollars.

Here is how you are charged at Restaurant...!

A simple thing made complicated
We have an uncanny ability to screw simple things and make it complex. Taxes and charges on seemingly simple stuffs like food and drinks are one such thing where customers are taken for granted. Let’s understand few terms that we see on our food bill often but do not understand.
Service charge
This is charged by the restaurant for the services rendered to you. This money goes to the restaurant. The establishments are free to charge any amount as service charges as there are no guidelines provided by the tax authority. The charge varies from 5% to 10%. Few restaurants don’t charge it. This is equivalent to the tips people usually give to waiters. If you are charged service charge in the bill, don’t pay tips as this charge is supposed to be shared among the staff.
Most of us don’t bother about it even when we feel the charges are higher. One reason is that we don’t think anything can be done about it. Secondly, we don’t want to spoil our evening because of this and argue with restaurant manager. However, the ground rule is that if the menu mentions service charges, you have to pay. If it doesn’t, you can question it.

Service tax
Many people confuse service tax with service charges. Service tax is the tax levied by the Government on the services rendered by restaurants. Service tax is same in all states. It is 12.36% on the 40% of the bill. The bill includes your food and drink and the service charge. The restaurant must be air-conditioned for the service tax. The problem here is that most of the customers are taxed at the full bill and not on the 40% of the bill as directed.
To make things simple, service tax should be 40% * 12.36% = 4.94% on the total bill. Hence whenever you see service tax on the total bill exceeding about 5%, you can question it.
VAT (Value Added Tax)
There is another tax called VAT (value added tax) that is state specific. The rates can be as low as 5% and as high as 20% depending upon the states. Moreover, VAT for food items and drink are different. Many restaurants might club food items and drink and charge a flat rate on the total bill. In such cases, it is good to ask for separate bills for food and drinks. This should clearly show the different VAT for both the items.

Example
Let’s see how service charge, tax and VAT work with an example. Suppose you have dined in an AC restaurant and the price of food items is summed to Rs 900. You will be asked to pay service charges (goes to the restaurant) and VAT and service tax (goes to Government)

Items
Amount
Bill of food item
900
Service charge (assuming 6%)
54
Sum Total
954
Service tax to be levied on (40% of sub-total)
381.6
Service tax (at the rate of 12.36%)
47.16576
VAT @ 12.5% of the sub-total
119.25
Total amount to be paid
1120.416

Many times, restaurants charge the highest rate on the total bill. This is general complaint by almost all the customers.

The latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0, or simply Android ICS introduces a bunch of new features never seen before in its prior iterations. It would be available for tablets as well as smart-phones and it is expected to hit the Indian stores in November.

#1...Font System

One of the first things you will notice while using Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is the brand new font system, which is much more appealing than previous versions. It is known as Roboto which is specially designed for high resolution screens and brings a magazine-like feel to the whole interface.

Finally, your Android smartphone will allow you to take screenshots without rooting the smartphone or installing any third-party apps. Just hold down the volume down key and the power button to capture the screen.

#3...Instant voice

While this is not as compelling as Siri on iPhone, unlike other versions of Android which support voice commands, Android 4.0 will not take very long to transcribe your words. Just speak it in and it instantly transforms it into text.

#4...Android Beam

This features is based on NFC (Near Field Communication) and it allows two Android smartphones to securely exchange Web pages, contacts, media or even applications. It is based on NDEF Push technology.

#5...Unified tablet and smartphone API

Unlike Android Honeycomb, Android 4.0 ICS will work on tablets as well as smartphones, making it simple for developers to create one application and have it work on various form factors. This will surely improve the number applications on Android tablets.

#6...Web browser

The new version comes with a brand new Chrome mobile Web browser. It syncs with your desktop or laptop Chrome bookmarks, it can save pages for offline reading, and it can open upto 16 tabs at the same time.

#7...Improved Camera & Facial Recognition

Android ICS has some great new camera features, a brand new camera UI, options to edit your images using multiple effects right after you click them and it captures images at a ridiculously fast speeds, probably the fastest amongst smartphones. Video recording modes have also improved along with support for a time lapse mode.

India might overtake japan to become the world's 3rd largest economy in 2011...!

India might become the world's third largest economy in 2011 by overtaking Japan in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) measured according to the domestic purchasing power of the rupee, otherwise called purchasing power parity.

India is now the fourth-largest economy behind the US, China and Japan. Numbers from 2010 show that the Japanese economy was worth $4.31 trillion, with India snapping at its heels at $4.06 trillion. But after March's devastating tsunami and earthquakes, Japan's economy is widely expected to contract while India's economy will grow between 7% and 8% this fiscal.

India should overtake Japan in 2011 to become the third-largest economy in the world at purchasing power parity
IMF forecasts show India and Japan neck-to-neck in 2011, but the disaster in Japan has brought the event forward.

Were it not for the earthquake and tsunami, India would have overtaken Japan in around 2013-14

The purchasing power parity (PPP) method measures the size of an economy by levelling price differences between countries that occur in the process of conversion to a single currency.

Under this method, a dollar should be able to buy the same amount of goods anywhere in the world and exchange rates should adjust accordingly.

The Economist's Big Mac Index, which takes the price of a Big Mac burger across 120 countries to calculate the 'real' price of its currency, is a crude way to measure PPP. India was included in the index recently. It showed that the Indian rupee was undervalued by 53% against the US dollar in August.

Earlier, a report by consultant PwC suggested that the Indian economy would surpass the Japanese economy in 2012. The IMF expects the Japanese economy to contract 0.7% this year while India is expected to grow 8.2%. A bigger economy could also give the government additional clout and bargaining power overseas.
According to the University of Pennsylvania PPP world tables, India has already moved ahead of Japan in 2010. The size of the Indian economy is expected to reach almost $5 trillion by the end of 2011.

Google introducing +1 icon for the best search result...!

Google is introducing a new feature in Google search results today: +1. But what is it? A new social network? A social thingy? A social search engine? Is it even social?

When you're signed into your Google account, every Google search result will now have a +1 icon next to it (right now you have to activate in Google Experimental). If you find the search result useful or just enjoy the linked site, you hit the +1 icon. Google says by +1-ing a result you're giving it a recommendation, a stamp of approval. More +1's on a result means the site is more interesting.

You can see what your friends +1'd which ideally lends more credence to a particular search result. Since Google displays so many sites, these little +1's will help you sift out the crappy ones (if you didn't banish them already). Imagine if your best friend found a link interesting and +1'd it. When you stumble upon that in the future, you're probably going to click it.

Google +1 :

  • A simple way to like google search results.
  • A definitely social.
  • Not a social network.
  • that helps google target ads better
  • Eventually grow bigger
  • wont change the way you use Google .

    To join in this experiment:
    1. Go to Google Labs
    2. Make sure you're signed into your Google Account (required)
    3. Click 'Join this experiment'
    4. Search for something you love on Google.com
    5. Click the new +1 button, and make your mark on the web

You can get rest of the Authorised information and activation details in Google Labs itself.

How to protect ur privacy on Google +1:

Your +1's are public. They can appear in Google search results, on ads, and sites across the web. You'll always be able to see your own +1's in a new tab on your Google Profile.

Google +1 allows you to share links you find in Google (and soon on other websites). When one of your Google contacts conducts a similar search, he or she will see that you "+1'd" the link. Google will soon let your Twitter and Flickr contacts view your +1's too

Google makes it clear that your +1's can be visible to anyone, not just your contacts. There's no way around that (for now), so if you want to keep your personal information private, keep as much information out of your profile as possible.

    google profile main page

This could be as simple as limiting it to just your first name. You aren't required to add a photo, location, or any other personal information. In fact, you can just use your first name and last initial if you want.
The next step is to block Google from using your +1 information to display personalized ads. Go to Google.com and click the "gears" button in the top right corner and select  "Account Settings."
    google +1 account settings
Next, click "Edit" next to "+1 on non-Google sites.
    google +1 account settings
Finally, make sure the circle next to "Disable" is filled in and click "Save." Now Google is blocked from using your +1 information in ads.
    disable google +1 ads

Google to launch its own social network in May...!

Google is likely to launch its own social network in May. According to technology blog, 'The Next Web', the search engine giant will unveil Google Circles at its Google I/O conference in San Francisco, reports the Daily Mail.

It is believed the network will allow users to selectively share content with people who are members of different social circles in their lives.

Users will be able to filter what content is shown to which group. However, Google yesterday denied reports that the network is to launch at the South by Southwest technology event, currently taking place in Austin, Texas.

The company also refused to confirm or deny any plans for a social network website.

Future "Facebook search" makes little nervous to Google...!

With the recent approval of an automatic "curated" search patent, Facebook could well be moving into Google's territory and making it at least a little nervous as the social network's 600 million users (and growing) could use the algorithm to find answers to their burning questions amongst their FB friends, rather than go outside of it.
The patent, "Visual tags for search results generated from social network information," which was approved about a month ago, gives Facebook the ability to generate search results and rank them according to a link's popularity within a person's group of FB friends. The more friends a person has, the more likely to get somewhat meaningful results. But even those with fewer than several hundred friends could benefit since Facebook can expand the definition of a person's social network to include a few degrees of separation.
The invention provides still another technique to improve the relevance of search results. According to an embodiment of the invention, search results, including sponsored links and algorithmic search results, are generated in response to a query, and are ranked based on the frequency of clicks on the search results by members of social network who are within a predetermined degree of separation from the member who submitted the query. The predetermined degree of separation is equal to one if the click activities of only the friends of the member who submitted the query are to be examined.
Search sounds limited, but it isn’t when you realize that many activities on the Web could be said to involve search and clicking a like button could be said to clicking a link. Want to buy a book? You search for a title at a reseller like Amazon (AMZN) or Barnes & Noble (BN). Want to read something? Here’s a list of articles, voted by your connections, no matter what publication created the content. Want to buy something? Here are the recommended items and where you can purchase them.
The patent turns a social network and its relations into a way to augment search of any type. Given the frustrations many have with being overwhelmed by search results, Facebook has a potential huge advantage over search companies. It may also have locked down a monetarily valuable aspect of social network data that none of its direct competitors have capitalized on. This is one strategically brilliant company.

Google to add advanced Sign in Security for ur Google Accounts ...!

    Google CEO-Eric Schmidt
Passwords are a pain sometimes. Use the same one at too many places and you risk losing everything, use too many different ones and they’re too difficult to remember.
Google are now trying to avert these problems by adding another layer of security to Google Accounts – two-step verification. Here’s how it works.
Google will first ask for your password, then a verification code that you can obtain using your phone. This is similar to the system introduced for Google Apps customers a while ago. This will added in the next few days, with a new link poised to appear on your Account settings page.

You can opt-in to have your logins need an additional step. Umm... yeah.

If you’re absolutely sure no one else will be using your computer, you can even set the account up to remember your verification code for a 30-day period, following which you’ll have regenerate and enter it again.

I'm not sure I like this, to be honest. But it is optional and security is rather important right now, because I don’t want my account getting hacked and sending out strange things to people I know. What’s your take on this?

Is Nokia Dead..?? Does it have Future...??

Nokia used to make some cracking handsets. Over the years I’ve owned several, and up until the iPhone, I’d have to say that the best handset I’d owned was the Nokia Communicator 9000i. But Nokia’s lost its way, and if the leaked memo published by Engadget is real, newly appointed CEO Stephen Elop realizes just how bad a predicament the company is in.

Nokia seems to have finally realized that Symbian and MeeGo just don’t cut it. Consumers have turned their backs on Nokia’s current platform, so it needs to get on with building, catalyzing and joining ecosystems …
And that’s what I think Nokia will do.
Here’s my prediction - Nokia will bin MeeGo (or go down to just a single product as the memo suggests). It will also maintain Symbian but in a lesser capacity. Why? Because Europeans still like Symbian and dumping it would seem reactionary. But neither of these moves will revitalize Nokia. To do that, Nokia needs a platform.
But why settle for one platform. My prediction is that Nokia will do what HTC has done, and jump on the Android and Windows Phone 7. Android would give Nokia access to an already well-established ecosystem, while Windows Phone 7 would allow Nokia the opportunity to get in close to the start with a budding ecosystem. It a trick that worked for HTC, so there’s no reason to think that it wouldn’t work for Nokia.

    AOL may merge with Yahoo...!

AOL Inc, undergoing a radical transformation into the king of content on the Internet, is actively exploring a breakup of the company involving a complicated series of transactions that may lead to a merger with Yahoo Inc, sources close to the plans said.

The plans are still in the exploratory stage and Yahoo has not been contacted, the sources said. The plans are also fraught with complications involving myriad moving pieces but would entail breaking apart AOL's two main business: its legacy dial-up Internet service and display advertising business.

In many respects, the latest discussions are derivative of plans contemplated back in 2008 and 2009 before Time Warner spun off AOL to Time Warner shareholders. AOL has continued to explore a break up option since the December 2009 spin off.
