82% of colleges use Facebook to recruit Students...!

Four out of five college admissions officers use Facebook to recruit students, according to last year’s survey by Kaplan Test Prep. “We found that 82 percent of admissions officers reported that their school is using Facebook to recruit students,” Russell Schaffer, Kaplan’s Senior Communication Manager, told All Facebook.
Now, I seriously doubt that the content of a prospective student’s Facebook profile is more important than their grades, extracurricular activities, or teacher recommendations, but it’s not that huge of a surprise that the social network is playing a role in the admission process. After all, if recruiters check Facebook when hiring future employees, there’s really no reason why schools can’t do the same for students. Sometimes your online profile can be the tiebreaker. It’s also important to note that the high number likely also includes college representatives finding interesting students online and encouraging them to apply to their school.
If you’re a student, there are two ways to take advantage of this information. On the one hand, you can try to make your Facebook profile as exemplary as possible. This is quite difficult given that you have to stay on top of what your Facebook friends tag you in and so on.

Now, protect your vehicle using passwords...!

Have you spent sleepless nights worried about the safety of your vehicle? Well, now you can be at ease. G Sankar Narayana, a technician in the Indian army and currently attached to the Queen Mary's Technical Institute (QMTI) at Khadki, has developed a security solution to prevent vehicle thefts.

The kit, developed by Narayana, has the facility to unlock and start the vehicle by entering a password which can prevent vehicle theft. The kit priced at Rs 270 has been developed using parts available in the local market. According to the police, on an average 3,000 cases of vehicle thefts are registered every year in Pune, which has a vehicle population of 20 lakh.
This kit is named as "security code engine starter".

If a thief tries to dismantle the kit or cut the wires to steal the vehicle, he will not be able to start the vehicle. But when the owner returns he can start the vehicle even if the kit is dismantled, with the help of the backup kit. It is a very low cost solution to prevent vehicle theft. If produced on a larger scale it can be even cheaper.
The kit could prove helpful in rural as well as urban areas. An option to change the password is available with the owner, making it more secure

Students who skip school are tracked by GPS..!

Skipping class, though frowned upon, is practically a rite of passage for young teens, but thanks to an elaborate system involving GPS being used by some school districts, it is practically being eliminated completely.

Basically any students in the seventh- or eighth-grade who have four or more unexcused absences over the course of a school year can be put into the Anaheim program. They will be assigned a GPS tracking device about the size of a cell phone, and they'll need to use it regularly
The newspaper said:
"Each morning on schooldays, [students will] get an automated phone call reminding them that they need to get to school on time. Then, five times a day, they are required to enter a code that tracks their locations – as they leave for school, when they arrive at school, at lunchtime, when they leave school and at 8 p.m.

The students are also assigned an adult coach who calls them at least three times a week to see how they are doing and help them find effective ways to make sure they get to class on time."
It's worth noting that while this anti-truancy program is very elaborate and almost invasive, it is also entirely optional. Students and their parents are offered the chance to voluntarily participate in the "monitoring as a way to avoid continuation school or prosecution with a potential stay in juvenile hall."
"The GPS devices cost $300-$400 each. Overall, the six-week program costs about $8 per day for each student, or $18,000. ... Because schools lose about $35 per day for each absent student, the program can pay for itself and more if students return to class consistently."
"Where the GPS technology has been implemented, average attendance among the chronically truant jumped from 77 percent up to 95 percent during the six-week program."

Green Roofed Hillside Homes Blending Into their Environment...!

Austrian architects Tobias Weiss and Gernot Reisenhofer have designed a beautiful series ofterraced hillside homes that save energy by blending into their environment. Nestled against the surrounding hills, each green-roofed apartment takes advantage of passive solar design, rainwater recycling, and photovoltaic sunshades

Weiss and Reisenhofer designed their green hillside community with a variety of passive design features in mind. South-facing windows optimize daylighting and thermal gain in the cooler months, while natural ventilation and photovoltaic shading systems keep the interiors cool during the summer.
The community’s terraced layout ensures that each apartment has a beautiful view, complete with a stretch of green space out front that doubles as an insulating green roof for the unit below. The roofs are populated with local plants and feature rainwater recycling systems that help water the plants and provide greywater for use in the apartments. A series of pedestrian walkways winds between these rooftop parks, encouraging the use of sustainable transportation and creating a tightly knit community..

New satellites to be able to predict earthquakes..!

A team of British and Russian scientists have launched a project that could predict when and where earthquakes will occur, and thus save thousands of lives.
An agreement to work together on the project, that was signed in Moscow, says the TwinSat project involves the launch of two satellites - one is about the size of a TV set and the other smaller than a shoebox - which will orbit the earth a few hundred kilometres apart, The Independent reported.
Data from the satellites will be collated with data from the ground as the scientists try to understand what natural warnings are given prior to earthquakes.
'As stress builds up in the Earth prior to an earthquake, subtle electromagnetic signals are released that can be read from the upper atmosphere,' said Alan Smith, director of the Mullard Space Science Laboratory at the University College, London.
We want to try to work out how these signals differ from all the other things that are present at any given time.
The two linked satellites will monitor zones with high seismic and volcanic activity, such as Iceland and the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russia's far east.
This project could be a huge step towards understanding how to read the signals.
'Just imagine if we could have accurately predicted the Haiti earthquake a few weeks before,' said Chmyrev.
'Or if we had predicted the Icelandic volcano eruption that paralysed transport routes for weeks. The potential human and economic benefits are enormous.'
the satellites were so small, the technology was relatively cheap.
These satellites are absolutely incredible, you can almost hold them in the palm of your hand
If the project progresses as we want it to, we'll be able to send up several more of them to increase coverage.
The first satellite launch is planned for 2015.

Facebook was sixth in place for online video

171 million US Internet users watched online video content in January 2011 for an average of 14.5 hours per viewer. The total US Internet audience engaged in nearly 4.9 billion viewing sessions last month.
While Facebook dominates in the online photo space, the company only took sixth place in US online video properties, ranked by unique video viewers, according to comScore. The social network saw 42.1 million unique viewers experience 122.6 million viewing sessions for an average of 15.4 minutes per viewer.

Google sites, driven primarily by YouTube, ranked as the top online video content property with 144.1 million unique viewers. Vevo captured second place with 51.0 million viewers, Yahoo sites were third with 48.7 million viewers, Viacom Digital took fourth position with 48.1 million viewers, while AOL settled for firth with 44.5 million viewers.
Facebook should be able to make it in to the top three rather quickly. In fact, the website has been in second place before: back in August 2010. This just shows how close the race for second place currently is: only Google has had nothing to worry about since it is far ahead in first place.

Now wireless radios can send and recieve signals simultaniously...!

Radio waves make the world go around.  They make communication and navigation satellites possible,  underpin modern aviation,  and allow you to access the Internet without wires.  One characteristic of radio technology is that traffic flows in only one direction at a time on a specific frequency.
That’s why pilots, police, and other walkie-talkie users frequently use “over” as they take turns speaking.
But now Stanford researchers have developed a way that allows wireless signals to be sent and received simultaneously on a single channel. Their research could help build faster, more efficient communication networks, at least doubling the speed of existing networks.
Watch the accompanying video to see the wireless set-up in action.

“Textbooks say you can’t do it,” said Philip Levis, assistant professor of computer science and of electrical engineering. “The new system completely reworks our assumptions about how wireless networks can be designed,” he said in a university release.
Levis and his team made the discovery bases on a seemingly simple idea. What if radios could do the same thing our brains do when we listen and talk simultaneously: screen out the sound of our own voice?
The main obstacle to two-way simultaneous conversation is that incoming signals are overwhelmed by the radio’s own transmissions, making it impossible to talk and listen at the same time.
“When a radio is transmitting, its own transmission is millions, billions of times stronger than anything else it might hear [from another radio],” Levis said. “It’s trying to hear a whisper while you yourself are shouting.”

The dawn of intelligent machines..!

The idea may scare some, but Intel predicts that by 2050 machines could surpass the peak of human intelligence.
So predicted Justin Rattner, chief technology officer at the chip maker, in a presentation at the Intel Developer Forum which examined how technology is expected to bridge the gap between man and machine.
The vision included sensitive robots and shape-shifting materials.
Robots of the future have to be more in tune with humans said Intel
"There is no question that one of the most likely things that will happen in the next 40 years is that machine and human intelligence will come much closer together," Mr Rattner told the BBC.

He said: "There is speculation that we may be approaching an inflection point where the rate of technology advancements is accelerating at an exponential rate, and machines could even overtake humans in their ability to reason, in the not so distant future."
Mr Rattner's keynote speech included a video presentation from inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil who talked about the impending day when humans create a machine smarter than they are - a moment dubbed "The Singularity".
Mr Kurzweil said: "That machines will be more intelligent than humans is not a question of if or when it will happen. The real question is: What will it take for us to make it happen?"

Overtaking humans

Mr Rattner tried to answer the question by talking about the technological advances going on at Intel.
He said the company was researching social interaction, robotics, increases in wireless communication, signalling and better sensors that help a computer sense the world around it.
intel forum
Sensors in the robot's arm allows it to 'feel' the object without touching it
Mr Rattner also told the audience that the company's research labs are already looking at human-machine interfaces as well as investigating future implications to computing.
"The industry has taken much greater strides than anyone ever imagined 40 years ago.
Intel researchers took to the stage at the IDF to demonstrate some of the projects aimed at moving the world towards "The singularity".

intel
WREL technology promises to free users from power cords and wall sockets
In another demonstration, Intel revealed its work on programmable matter called catoms. Fully realised these will use millions of tiny micro-robots which are used to build shape shifting materials. The technology could make it possible for a device to actually change physical form in order to suit the way it is being used.

7 Things to know about Nokia-Microsoft deal

#1...How the deal will work
How the deal will work
Nokia’s Maps product will become a core part of Microsoft’s services, while Microsoft’s development tools will create applications for Nokia Windows phones.

The two companies are hammering out the financial details of their "broad strategic partnership" to make Windows Phone 7 the primary operating system for Nokia phones. But broadly, Nokia will pay royalties for licensing the phone software and in return Microsoft will invest in marketing and developing the phones, but it isn't clear which will be the greater sum.

Analysts said the licensing agreement is complicated by the fact that some of Nokia's technology will be included in the phones, such as mapping and navigation. The Finnish phone-maker may also get a cut of the revenue Microsoft gets from putting its Bing search engine on the devices. This alone could be worth $1.25 billion a year to Microsoft, estimates Richard Williams at Cross Research.

#2...Asset 'transfer"
Asset 'transfer'
Both the parties bring something to the deal. Nokia brings with it, its "tremendous brand," as Nokia CEO said, and also mobile devices, an application store, and maps.

Microsoft will bring the Windows Phone 7 software, and brands including Office, Xbox Live and Bing.

Also, as pointed by Stephen Shankland of CNET, Microsoft phones will be able to link up with Nokia's agreements for carrier billing--a popular option in parts of the world where credit cards are less common. And Nokia will fold its own app store into the Microsoft Marketplace

#3...Nokia gets 'divided'
Nokia gets 'divided'
Nokia said that it will have two units: Smart Devices and Mobile Phones. It named Jo Harlow to head the Smart Devices unit, while the other will be led by Mary McDowell. In North America, a weak spot for Nokia, it appointed Chris Weber, a 16- year Microsoft veteran, as president of its US unit.

#4...Symbian,MeeGO OS's not going for 'now'
Symbian, MeeGO not going for 'now'
Nokia will bring out a device this year on MeeGo, a high- end operating system it’s developing with Intel Corp, to gauge market reaction, Elop said. MeeGo engineers will then be shifted to work on innovations that can help Nokia leapfrog rivals.

Nokia plans to ship another 150 million phones based on its current smartphone operating system Symbian. However, Nokia CEO's announcement that "Windows Phone is our primary platform" in effect spells the end of Symbian.

#5...Nokia to cut R&G budget
Nokia to cut R&D budget
Nokia plans to “substantially reduce” its research and development budget. Nokia CEO Elop said that at 5.9 billion euros ($8.1 billion), Nokia’s corporate R&D spending is more than four times that of Apple’s

#6...Job cuts
Job cuts
Nokia CEO said that there will be “significant reductions” in Nokia jobs. "There will be substantial reductions in employment in various locations around the world and that too will affect Finland," Elop told reporters. "We don't have any specific comments about who and what level of people will be hit," he added in a webcast.

Earlier, the company announced 1,800 job cuts in the workforce of more than 120,000.

#7...Nokia did talk to Google
Nokia did talk to Google
Nokia CEO said that the company also had extensive discussions with Google, the other candidate for a deal, but that there was insufficient opportunity for Nokia to “differentiate” its products from others such as those made by Motorola, HTC or Samsung. There was also, with Google's strength in mapping, little chance for Nokia to get much out of its own strength in maps

Apophis Astroid(=65,000 nuclear bombs) Could Strike Earth in 2036..!

The Apophis asteroid could collide with the Earth on April 13, 2036, Russian astronomers say, according to Science.

An artist's conception of a giant asteroid hitting the early earth. (Courtesy of NASA)
"Apophis will approach Earth at a distance of 37,000–38,000 kilometers (22,990–23,612 miles) on April 13, 2029,” Professor Leonid Sokolov at St. Petersburg State University told Science. “Its likely collision with Earth may occur on April 13, 2036.”

However, Sokolov said that the possibility of an actual strike is highly unlikely, because the 900-foot-long chunk of space rock will probably break up into fragments before then, leading to smaller collisions with our planet over several years.

Sokolov and his colleagues are predicting the event based on the possibility that the asteroid’s trajectory could be altered if it passes through a small gravitational keyhole in 2029.

NASA has confirmed the scenario put forward by the Russian space agency, following the discovery of Apophis in 2004, when NASA originally considered it a substantial threat to Earth’s future.

Apophis impact
But Yeomans said the probability of this happening is only 1-in-250,000. In April 2029, the asteroid will travel within five Earth radii of the planet, but there is only a "miniscule" chance it will pass through the keyhole, which is not much bigger than Apophis itself. If it does, however, it will be sent on a 2036 crash course for Earth

NASA estimates the energy from this particular asteroid to be roughly the same as if 65,000 nuclear bombs were dropped on us. What happens next depends on where it hits. It would certainly trash the immediate area, and it looks like estimates (from Wikipedia) tell us that an impact winter (a period of extended cold weather brought on by dust and particles shrouding the Earth and blocking the Sun) is unlikely.

Google to add advanced Sign in Security for ur Google Accounts ...!

Google CEO-Eric Schmidt
Passwords are a pain sometimes. Use the same one at too many places and you risk losing everything, use too many different ones and they’re too difficult to remember.
Google are now trying to avert these problems by adding another layer of security to Google Accounts – two-step verification. Here’s how it works.
Google will first ask for your password, then a verification code that you can obtain using your phone. This is similar to the system introduced for Google Apps customers a while ago. This will added in the next few days, with a new link poised to appear on your Account settings page.

You can opt-in to have your logins need an additional step. Umm... yeah.

If you’re absolutely sure no one else will be using your computer, you can even set the account up to remember your verification code for a 30-day period, following which you’ll have regenerate and enter it again.

I'm not sure I like this, to be honest. But it is optional and security is rather important right now, because I don’t want my account getting hacked and sending out strange things to people I know. What’s your take on this?

Is Nokia Dead..?? Does it have Future...??

Nokia used to make some cracking handsets. Over the years I’ve owned several, and up until the iPhone, I’d have to say that the best handset I’d owned was the Nokia Communicator 9000i. But Nokia’s lost its way, and if the leaked memo published by Engadget is real, newly appointed CEO Stephen Elop realizes just how bad a predicament the company is in.

Nokia seems to have finally realized that Symbian and MeeGo just don’t cut it. Consumers have turned their backs on Nokia’s current platform, so it needs to get on with building, catalyzing and joining ecosystems …
And that’s what I think Nokia will do.
Here’s my prediction - Nokia will bin MeeGo (or go down to just a single product as the memo suggests). It will also maintain Symbian but in a lesser capacity. Why? Because Europeans still like Symbian and dumping it would seem reactionary. But neither of these moves will revitalize Nokia. To do that, Nokia needs a platform.
But why settle for one platform. My prediction is that Nokia will do what HTC has done, and jump on the Android and Windows Phone 7. Android would give Nokia access to an already well-established ecosystem, while Windows Phone 7 would allow Nokia the opportunity to get in close to the start with a budding ecosystem. It a trick that worked for HTC, so there’s no reason to think that it wouldn’t work for Nokia.

NASA: The First 360 degree view of full Sun...!

NASA has released the first 360-degree view of the entire sun today, just in time for Super Bowl Sunday.
The photo comes courtesy of NASA's twin STEREO (Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory) spacecraft, which aligned exactly opposite each other around the sun to capture the image.
The ability to see the whole sun, front to back, will allow scientists to better understand complicated solar weather patterns and plan for future robotic or crewed spacecraft missions throughout the solar system, researchers said.
"The sun is a truly complex object which influences many aspects of our lives," Richard Harrison, principal investigator for the U.K. instruments on STEREO, said in a statement. "In the same way that you would not expect to understand the workings of the brain by studying just a small part of it, a global investigation into the nature of our star as a complete object is essential to understanding how it works."
Harrison is also co-investigator of NASA's SDO mission (Solar Dynamics Observatory), which contributed to the new 360-degree view with high-resolution sun photos taken from orbit.

AOL may merge with Yahoo...!

AOL Inc, undergoing a radical transformation into the king of content on the Internet, is actively exploring a breakup of the company involving a complicated series of transactions that may lead to a merger with Yahoo Inc, sources close to the plans said.

The plans are still in the exploratory stage and Yahoo has not been contacted, the sources said. The plans are also fraught with complications involving myriad moving pieces but would entail breaking apart AOL's two main business: its legacy dial-up Internet service and display advertising business.

In many respects, the latest discussions are derivative of plans contemplated back in 2008 and 2009 before Time Warner spun off AOL to Time Warner shareholders. AOL has continued to explore a break up option since the December 2009 spin off.

Microsoft has been caught stealing search results from Google.

In a case of Internet espionage that makes the antics of double agent Cold War operatives seem like frivolous child play, Bing has been caught stealing search results from Google with its Bing toolbar and IE8's Suggested Sites feature.

Google first suspected foul play in May 2010. By October 2010, with Bing results beginning to look uncannily like Google's, it knew something had to be done about it -- and so, in true, nerdtastic style, Google set up a sting to prove that Microsoft was actually behind the wholesale mimicry of Google's search results.

 One of Google's 'sting' queries
A few days later, the same result on Bing

Google injected "synthetic" results into its search engine -- fake queries and results that no real user or engine would ever generate. Then, on D-Day, December 17, about 20 Google engineers were asked to run the test queries with Internet Explorer 8, Bing Bar and Suggested Sites. By December 31, some of these fake results began appearing on Bing. See the examples after the break -- it's damning.

Two Guys + An HD Camera + Helium Baloon = Space Mission

Sometimes technology for what seems like a seriously intense, high-end (and I mean that literally as well) function can be made simply and without too much of stress on your pocket book. Take these two guys for example – Alex Baker (age 26) and Chris Rose (age 25), a couple of PhD students from Sheffield University in South Yorkshire, England, who designed, built and launched their own little ‘earth capture’ camera unit into space. There was no hydrogen or other fueled rocket involved here, just simple stuff that could be bought at any local convenience store.

All it took were things available at a supermarket and any electronics store

Their rig consisted of a GPS device that would relay co-ordinates to the ‘Dynamic-duo’ via text message after a simple call made to the device, an couple of HD digital cameras (one looks remarkably like a Creative Vado HD and the other like a Sony digicam), duct tape, a specially designed Styrofoam box to house the devices and a large helium filled balloon. The camera and GPS device were placed inside the box into slots that were cut out to keep them steady and then sealed with duct tape to keep the devices inside toasty warm while traversing the frigid outer regions (-50 degrees) of the planet.

The pair even made sure that wherever the box landed it would be returned safely to them. They did this by simply putting their numbers and names and sticking to the package. Can this get anymore low tech?

Gorgeous isn't she...

Footage and images captured with this low budget system looked really impressive. The whole kit cost them no more than Rs. 25,000 which included the price of the cameras, GPS device and all other items. Just goes to show, all it takes sometimes are great minds with no money to do something out of this world, well, almost out of this world
